Gross Green Juice

Maybe the title of this post will deter you from drinking this, or maybe you'll just want to try it and see.

I got this recipe off of Peanut Butter Finger's website - it's her Go-To Green Smoothie recipe, and I decided to try it out.
  • 2 large handfuls fresh kale
  • 1 large handful fresh spinach
  • 1 apple, chopped with seeds and stem removed (skin remains)
  • Juice of one lemon
  • 1/2 cucumber, chopped (skin remains)
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped
  • A few sprinkles of ground ginger
  • 1 cup cold water
Changes to the recipe: It calls for fresh ginger, but I only had ground, so I added a few sprinkles. I also didn't have just kale or just spinach (I bought a bag of spinach AND kale) so I just grabbed 3 big handfuls.

First, I chopped the apple, cucumber, and celery and put it at the bottom of my blender. (This was probably a mistake- I should have put the leaves in first. Now that I look at it, the way the recipe was written was probably the order in which the ingredients should be placed in the blender. Whoops!!)

Next, I grabbed the three handfuls of spinach/kale, and mashed them down so they would fit into the blender. I'm thinking maybe I grabbed too many leafy greens.

Then, I squeezed the lemon juice on top of all of it, and added 1 cup of cold water (you can see everything has a sheen of liquid over it now).

Then, I blended it.

After I halfway blended it, I added the ginger. Unclear if this made any difference or not.

This yielded two large cups of green juice... probably more than I would ever want in my life. It tasted quite bitter, but maybe that's what happens when you juice a bunch of kale and spinach.

Cheers!

  1. Hey you! That does sound gross, but I think it's the celery and the lemon. You could try orange instead of lemon, or berries - that would have a stronger taste. As far as the green part - I've found that if the green stuff I use is zucchini, spinach, or lettuce greens, coupled with citrus or berries, there's really no veggie taste. You might also try adding 1/2 C milk (almond, cashew, etc), which will make it creamier <3

    1. Hey hey! Thanks for the suggestions! I tried it again this morning and realized I just put too many leafy greens in. This time I only put about a cup in (at the bottom), and that mixed much better with the sweetness of the apple/lemon/cucumber. Dare I say it was actually...tasty? I was trying to keep it as fruit-less as possible and make it a veggie smoothie rather than a fruit smoothie - I'll try adding in zucchini next time!

  2. I've jumped on the green juice train too, I added chocolate protein powder and used almond milk for mine, it tasted ok but didn't do much for my hunger or appetite!

    1. Wow, almond milk and chocolate protein powder, that sounds delicious! I realized my mistake in this recipe was using too much leafy greens. I just have to get the ratio of apple/lemon juice (sweet things) to bitter (vegetables) right. It's been pretty tasty after I figured that out!
